![]() During his six-decade career, he caught countless red-eye flights east from Los Angeles, headed home from the city where he made his living to the island that gave him that living. His memories of working in that play were the anchor to which he kept returning. Andy, “Doc” Harvey, and their sons at the Oregon Inlet Coast Guard Station in October 1968. It’s just south of the Waterside Theatre, the home of The Lost Colony outdoor drama, where it all began for Andy in the summer of 1947. We cruised by Andy’s last big house peeking through the pines. My friend at the wheel pulled out from his downtown Manteo dock and piloted the boat out of Shallowbag Bay, then cruised slowly north on the sound, rocking gently by a sandspit where Andy sometimes parked his buddy-laden pontoon boat (he hated to be alone, my friends told me) and fiercely competed in volleyball. They told me about enjoying drinks with him on Roanoke Sound, and we shared drinks as they wove stories about Andy. Island friends were taking me out on their wooden sportfishing boat, a 30-footer with clean lines, a vessel they took Andy Griffith out on when he grew too frosty-haired frail to take out his own boat. It was dusk, a gray-dog day surrendering to a cool sunset in August 2020. I hope one day the first tune they whistle is the theme to the Andy Griffith Show.Excerpted from the book Andy Griffith’s Manteo: His Real Mayberry, which was published in May. I know I'll be watching this show with my kids. I'm glad DVD has made this wonderful gem available to past, present, and future generations. In the end it's the characters that make this show fantastic. Ronnie Howard is the cute kid, who's intelligence and maturity surpasses his age. However after awhile I began to enjoy his antics. Barney can at first can seem to be an idiot and anonying. The character development is the best part about this show. In the end, I just enjoy spending some time each day with the gang from Mayberry. I of course have my favorite episodes and those I don't like that much. The The plot of each episode varies from serious to hilarious. It's just all around great entertainment for the whole family. Andy occasionally will play guitar and sing. ![]() In the process it mixes a lot sarcastic, witty, and slapstick humor. It expounds on many social issues like single parenting, child rearing, relationships, and friendships. It has made me laugh year after year for decades. The Andy Griffith show is heart warming and enduring gem. ![]() I think I was about four or five the first time I saw it. I remember watching it when I was a youngster. However I've watched this show my whole life. ![]() I'm 26 so I didn't get to see it when it originally aired. ![]()
